As romance novel sales continue to dominate publishing, the genre continues to establish its own internal rules. Since Book Riot covered romance tropes back in 2020, the romance genre has grown exponentially in publishing. The major success of streaming adaptations like Bridgerton, Heartstopper, and Red, White & Royal Blue has driven even more interest in the original books and books with the same vibe and feel.

Looking at some of the bestsellers of the past five years in romance novels, we can identify a bunch of new tropes that are dominating. As trends like enemies-to-lovers, second-chance romance, and forced proximity have continued to grow, there are even more sub-tropes coming from within them. A lot of romance tropes also come from the fanfiction writers who have started to really take over the romance genres. Writers are now much more proudly able to explain their fanfiction origins, even with original stories. No matter your preference in romance, you’ll find something to strike your fancy.
