How Accurate Should Historical Fiction Be?

If youโ€™ve ever thought of writing a historical novel, or if youโ€™re an avid reader of historical fiction, you might have wondered how authors do it. How do they conduct their research? What sources are they pulling from? How do they balance fact and fiction? And how accurate should historical fiction be? These are all things I have wondered, too. So naturally, I set out on a little discovery mission.

In my quest, I read first-account stories of authors of historical fiction, and I reached out to two spectacular writers of the genre: Beverly Jenkins and Susanna Kearsley, authors whom I have long admired because of their ineffable knack for creating one hell of a good, engaging story, and using history as a vivid backdrop against which to set it. This is what I learned during this process.
