This year is not off to the strongest start for YA nonfiction. That trend continues into this month, where there’s little to share in that realm. It doesn’t mean we won’t see more nonfiction as the year progresses. It does mean, though, that the offerings aren’t diverse. That’s not only in terms of authorship, but in terms of the types of stories and perspectives being offered. Teens who love nonfiction don’t have a whole lot to choose from in February.

Dearth of YA nonfiction aside, there is a nice array of YA comics hitting shelves this month. As alluded to last month, there’s been real attention paid to the interest in and readership for young adult comics by publishers, and we’re seeing the fruits of the efforts put in to put out more.

Grab your TBR. It’s time to load it up with this month’s array of new YA nonfiction and comics.

Before We Wake by Sophia Glock book cover

Before We Wake by Sophia Glock

Alicia’s been having the same dream over and over, and she thinks that learning about the idea of lucid dreaming might help. She borrows a book on the topic and then starts to see her best friend’s boyfriend in her dreams. The two of them are really getting along and yes, they’re falling for each other.

There’s one big hitch: her best friend’s boyfriend remembers everything in the real world. It’s not just happening in dreamland, and now, Alicia has to figure out where and how the lines between waking and sleeping blur.

Glock’s sophomore graphic novel is getting comparisons to Lore Olympus and The Girl from the Sea.
