News From DC and Marvel

  • In addition to laying off vast swaths of people at Marvel Studios, Disney is also moving Marvel film production to the UK, where they won’t have to provide as many employee benefits as they do in Georgia. Far be it from me to question the almighty mouse, but Disney’s new CEO is not off to a very auspicious start here.
  • Popverse wrote a moving piece on the upcoming Justice League: Dream Girls miniseries, which was written by trans creators and stars two trans superheroes, and why it’s so important.
  • The biggest headline to come out of this year’s CinemaCon was probably the Avengers: Doomsday trailer featuring Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom.
  • John Nolan, uncle of Christopher and actor who appeared in the “Dark Knight” film trilogy, passed away at age 87.
  • If you watched the April 17 episode of Jeopardy!, you got to see comic book writer Tini Howard competing for glory!
  • During an appearance on Hot Ones, Oscar Isaac discussed a different kind of heat: the miserably heavy costume he had to wear as Apocalypse in X-Men: Apocalypse, which prevented him from getting to meet the actors that he signed onto the film to work with in the first place. Aww.
  • Supergirl star Milly Alcock made a mild remark about the backlash female film stars face for just existing…and immediately received backlash.
  • The trailer for The Punisher: One Last Kill dropped.
  • Marvel’s as-yet-unnamed X-Men film now has two writers — Lee Sung Jin and Joanna Calo — as well as a director, Jake Schreier.
  • Steve Morris wrote a highly entertaining take on the politics of Batman being a billionaire.

News From the Wider Comics World

  • Comics legend Adam Hughes was diagnosed with cancer, as was one of the family dogs. I’m sure you will all join me in wishing them both a speedy and complete recovery as the family navigates such a tough time.
  • Nominations for the 2026 Ringo Awards are open until May 28. If there’s a creator or a comic you really loved, get on in there and nominate them before the deadline!
  • Comic book sales have been looking unusually robust so far this year, mostly driven by popular manga series and a couple of notable DC titles. I salute you, fellow comics lovers!
  • We got our first glimpse of the upcoming Peanuts film, Snoopy Unleashed. Sounds fun! But will Apple release it in theaters or even on physical media, or will they confine it to their streaming service as they have been doing with most other Peanuts programming?
  • Netflix’s One Piece is getting a third season, subtitled The Battle of Alabasta, and a two-part Lego special.
  • If you’re excited for the last season of Bleach, get an early start this June when the first three episodes of the “Thousand-Year Blood War” arc are released in select theaters.
  • Digital comics platform Manta is now adding manga titles to its repertoire of manhwa, comics, and webtoons.
  • Going to the Annecy Film Festival in France this June? You could be among the first to see the animated film Batman: Knightfall and two episodes of the Ghost in the Shell series.
  • A security guard at Florida State University has been convicted of stealing the school’s comic book collection, worth six figures, in 2020-21.
  • Kaz Rowe posted an interesting video about everyone’s favorite old-timey social justice warrior, comic strip star Everett True.
