News from DC and Marvel
- Supergirl opened to mixed reviews and a disappointing box office. I should note that at least some of the negative press is coming from outlets like Fox News, so be sure you are ethically sourcing your movie critiques.
- Vanity Fair published a piece on Beau DeMayo’s messy exit from the cartoon series he created, X-Men ’97.
- Starting next spring, look for DC’s new line of Compact Comics for Kids, featuring all sorts of child-friendly super-adventures, including some based on properties you probably enjoyed when you were a kid.
- The trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day dropped.
- We also got trailers for the animated version of Batman: Knightfall and the second season of Batman: Caped Crusader.
- Yahya Abdul-Mateen II earned an Emmy nomination for his performance as the title character on Wonder Man.
- There was a rather pointless controversy over John Romita Jr.’s cover for Spider-Man #1000.
- This September, Marvel is releasing a special crossover comic to celebrate The Muppet Show‘s 50th anniversary.
Corporate synergy strikes again! - Andrea Shea, known for pushing for more queer representation, has been promoted to senior editor over at DC.
- Microsoft is considering laying off a whole bunch of people, including those currently working on the Blade video game.
News from the Wider Comics World
- Last month, the Prairieland defendants, a group of anti-ICE protestors, were found guilty on spurious terrorism charges. One of the defendants was cartoonist Daniel “Des” Sanchez-Estrada, who received a 30-year sentence for moving a box of leftist zines. - Stephanie Williams became the first Black woman–and only the second Black person ever–to be nominated for Best Writer at the Eisners, an accomplishment that many outlets ignored.
- The 2026 Harvey Award nominees have been announced!
- One more award-related headline: Gaysians by Mike Curato won the 2026 Lambda Award in the LGBTQ+ Comics category. Congrats!
- If you’re going to San Diego Comic-Con this year or just happen to be in the area, there’s an extra event you might want to check out: the SDCC Oral History Panel. The event is free to everyone, with or without a con badge.
- Manga platform emaqi has launched a new subscription service called emaqi Premium that lets users access hundreds of series from top publishers.
- Ignition Press is celebrating its second anniversary with a slew of new titles ranging from romantic comedy to horror.
- Crunchyroll dropped a whole bunch of trailers, including those for the anime version of The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn’t a Guy at All and other popular series.
- Controversial webcomic Song of the Wasteland, which came under fire for its deeply racist depictions of American history, has been cancelled, with the artist and the publisher both issuing apologies.
- Comics are a great way to provide important information in a digestible way, as this NPR comic about the dangers of excessive heat demonstrates.
- Roy Schwartz and Frank Stockton worked with the Smithsonian to create this excellent comic about the history of, well, comics!
- Interview time! Foreword Reviews talked with Chad Anderson, the author of Gay Mormon Dad, which was recently adapted into a graphic novel, and AIPT talked to Jadzia Axelrod and Sarah Webb about the upcoming Worlds Beyond Number graphic novel.
- The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are returning to the stage sometime next year, with specific dates and venues to be announced later. I knew we could count on them (if you don’t understand that reference, please enjoy this earworm).
