The most read books on Goodreads are very slightly different this week: Freida McFadden’s newest thriller, The Tenant, has been replaced by her her 2022 bestseller, The Housemaid. The Wedding People by Alison Espach is also back in the top five: it shifts around from week to week, but it’s usually in the top ten. The top three books are all familiar titles, though, including a summer romance novel and the newest from Taylor Jenkins Reid and Emily Henry.
Unfortunately, the most read books on Goodreads tend not to be diverse by any definition of the word. So, here are a couple of new books out this week that deserve wider readership.
![]() Extinction Capital of the World: Stories by Mariah RiggThis collection of short stories traces generations of characters living in Hawai’i, including a bittersweet summer romance between two teen girls who are the only ones their age on a tiny island and a story of a professional kayaker who falls for his Soviet competitor. I would recommend reading this slowly, spacing out the stories. They’re well written, thoughtful, and often melancholic.
