I love the Golden Age of Crime Fiction; there are just so many great books there, even beyond those by Agatha Christie and Dorothy L. Sayers. It was a real pleasure to read the newly republished gem of a book considered the first detective novel written by an African American writerโand it has an all-Black cast of characters. The definition of โfirstโ here is specific, as Encyclopedia Britannica points out that itโs the first not published in a serial form first. Whether it was the first-first or first-known African American detective novel, itโs definitely a book that should not be missed by crime fiction readers and/or fans of the Harlem Renaissance.
