It’s a new week, which means there’s a whole lot of new YA books to get excited about. The big themes among this week’s releases? Horror. You’re going to get the chance to dive into some new scary reads for the upcoming season–though if you are at all like me, horror reading season is all year long, so this is just a bump in the number of options available.

The new books hitting shelves this week aren’t all horror, though. You’ll also find some romance, some realism, and some fantasy as well. This is also the beginning of a fall that is absolutely flush with romantasy titles. You’ll also see some new authors making an appearance alongside some well-established YA voices. There’s really something here for every kind of reader this week.

Of note, though, is this: the diversity isn’t as great this week as it is in YA more broadly. We’ll see this shift as the month and season moves forward.

blood moon book cover

Blood Moon by Britney S. Lewis

Mirabella’s mom disappeared without a trace when she was 13. Before that, Mira believed in the legends of her small midwestern town: werewolves protected humans from vampires, until a werewolf fell in love with one and a bloody history unfurled.

So in her first year at college, Mira’s finally feeling like she can leave all of that behind her. Too bad she can’t–there are strange animal attacks happening around campus and they’re being tied to the case related to her mother’s disappearance. Julian Santos is the only person who seems to know what’s going on, but all he does is try to convince Mira to get off campus. She doesn’t want to and she refuses to let him tell her what to do.

The Blood Moon is getting closer, things are getting weirder on campus, and Mira’s feelings about Julian are getting stronger. None of them are prepared for what’s about to happen.

split the sky book cover

Split the Sky by Marie Arnold

Lala, 15, absolutely agrees with social justice and the goals of her school’s Black Alliance Club. But she’s tired of fighting these fights and doesn’t want to join in; instead, she wants to focus her efforts on her passion for music and for getting out of her small town.

Something else about Lala: she has the same gift her grandmother has to see visions of the future. Those visions are almost always what happens.

Lala has a vision in her small Texas sundown town of a Black boy being shot by a white homeowner amid calls for better diversifying the community. She’s got to find that boy and protect him.

There’s a hitch, though. Lala’s grandma is also seeing visions, but they’re about what happens in the wake of that boy’s murder. The entire community will see protests and change, resulting in the kind of inclusive future they’re all fighting for. But this vision won’t come true if anything along the way is altered, putting Lala into an impossible place. Does she help save the boy in her vision or not, knowing either way will alter the course of their town’s future.

you've goth my heart book cover

You’ve Goth My Heart by L. C. Rosen

Gary got a text from a wrong number. He’s somewhat under the belief it could be a serial killer or his ex. But as they text a bit, the person on the other end of the phone seems to share a lot of Gary’s interests. It’s piquing Gary’s interests a lot and now, they’re going to finally meet. This could be Gary’s perfect goth partner. They’re going to finally do it on Halloween, which is the night of the town’s big house decorating contest.

Things are tricky in the meantime, though. Gary’s ex seems to be coming back into the picture, and there’s a super intense goth kid trying to win the house decorating contest. Oh, and maybe serial killers targeting gay teens? Whether or not Gary will meet his dream boyfriend or not on Halloween remains to be seen.

Yes, this one is intended to be slightly scary, funny, and romantic all at once: the perfect combination.

how to survive a horror movie book cover

How to Survive a Horror Movie by Scarlett Dunmore

I’ve written a couple of times this year that there is a rise in the number of YA books being released simultaneously in hardcover and in paperback. This is the first of two this week; the second is Don’t Let It Break Your Heart, listed below.

Charley Ryan loves horror movies but she never expected to be living in one. She’s at an all-girls boarding school on a remote island (really, she never expected it?) and someone or something is killing off the seniors one by one. There are all kinds of scary things around campus, too, and Charley is convinced that she is seeing the ghosts of the classmates who’ve become victims.

Unfortunately, the bad news doesn’t end there. Charley is a prime suspect in the murders because of her devotion to all things horror. Now she and her best friend Olive need to work to clear her name by finding the actual killer. Perhaps those ghosts Charley can’t stop seeing may be of help.

tastes like candy book cover

Tastes Like Candy by Jessica Lacy

For readers who like gory horror, this sounds like one you’ll want on your TBR. That it’s blurbed by Stephen Graham-Jones is no small feat.

Violet Warren and her best friends were the chosen ones for the annual Senior Scavenge event at their high school. Everyone wants an invite, so Violet knows how lucky they are. The girls will be allowed inside Poison Apple Carnival after hours, where they’ll take part in the scavenger hunt meant to usher them into a fantastic and magical senior year.

But this year is not the magical experience promised. Almost immediately, a masked person is on the loose in the Carnival, too, and they’re taking out Violet’s friends one by one. Now Victoria has to figure out if she can catch the masked murderer or if she’ll be the next one taken down.
